On Monday, President Biden took aim at 9mm handguns, saying they should be banned for “high-caliber weapons.”
The remarks are coming a week after the president returned from a visit to the location of the Texas mass shooting, where 21 people, including 19 elementary school children, lost their lives.
Biden recalled seeing X-rays of gunshot wounds while at a trauma center in New York. Through a 9mm bullet, the lung would be blown out of the body,” Biden said. “A .22 caliber bullet lodges in the lung, but we could probably get it out.”.
“There simply is no rational basis for using these high-caliber weapons for self-defense, hunting,” Biden added. It must be remembered that the constitution has never been absolute.
“The Second Amendment didn’t allow you to own a cannon,” Biden said. A lot of weaponry was not easily available to purchase.”
As the 2020 presidential candidate, Biden emphasized his opposition to guns during his remarks. The former vice president said during a fundraising event in Seattle in November that he supports the Second Amendment, but he finds absolutist arguments about gun rights absurd.
He asked, “Why should people be allowed to possess military-style weapons such as pistols with 9-mm bullets and the ability to hold 10 rounds or more?”
According to the Shooting Industry magazine, the 9mm round accounted for more than half of all handguns produced in 2019. According to the data, 9mm pistols made up more than 40% of all pistols made in the United States during the 2010s – or nearly four out of ten pistols manufactured.
